Licensed, insured, and known for keeping homeowners in the loop from the first estimate to the final walkthrough. You will always know who is coming, when, and what they are doing.
Every project runs the same way: an on-site estimate, a written proposal, daily updates while the crew is there, and a walkthrough before you see a bill.
Jobs most painters in the metro turn down. Three of them keep us working straight through a Minnesota winter.
The same process on every job, whether it is one bedroom or the whole exterior.
We come to the house, look at the actual surfaces, and ask what you want out of the project. No obligation. If you are stuck on color or sheen, every client also gets a free hour with our interior designer.
Prep, full scope of work, and what to expect, in writing. Clear line-item pricing with no hidden fees.
Furniture moved and covered, plastic sheeting and drop cloths hung, paper on the floors when the job calls for it.
A text each morning with your painters’ arrival time. An end-of-day recap in person, or by text if you are not home.
We walk the job with you and fix anything you flag before you see a final bill. Your package carries 1 to 4 years of warranty coverage.

We are based in Maplewood and work the east and north metro. If your city is not on the list, call anyway. If it is inside the drive, we will come look.
Housing stock in the east metro changes a lot from one city to the next, and it changes what a repaint actually involves.
Most of Shoreview went up between the late 1970s and the 1990s, which puts a lot of it on its second or third exterior repaint. Cedar and hardboard siding from that era needs failed caulk, soft spots, and nail pops dealt with before a drop of paint goes on. That prep is most of what separates a repaint that lasts from one that does not.
Vadnais Heights homes skew a little newer, mostly mid-1980s, with a lot of vinyl and fiber cement siding. Both paint well. The catch is color: go too dark on vinyl and it can hold enough heat to warp. We will tell you where that line sits before you fall in love with a swatch.
White Bear Lake has the oldest housing of the three, much of it 1960s and earlier, with wood siding and a lot of decks near the water. That means more carpentry-style prep than anywhere else we work, and more deck and fence staining. Lake-facing wood takes a beating from sun and moisture both.
We paint in Maplewood, St. Paul, Woodbury and 13 other east and north metro cities on the same terms. If you are looking for house painters near you and your city is on the list above, we will come out and look.

Start with the state. Every legitimate Minnesota contractor has a registration number you can look up through the Department of Labor and Industry, and ours is IR799231. Ask for a certificate of insurance showing both general liability and workers’ compensation, rather than taking a website’s word for it. Then compare written proposals instead of verbal numbers. Surface condition drives most of what a job costs, so an estimate done on site will hold up better than one done over the phone.
Yes. We are based in Maplewood and cover Shoreview, Vadnais Heights, and White Bear Lake, along with St. Paul, Woodbury, Stillwater, Oakdale and eleven more cities across the east and north metro. The rule is simple: if you are inside about a fifty-minute drive of Maplewood, we will come out and look.
It depends on square footage, surface condition, and how much prep the job needs, which is why we do not quote over the phone. The on-site estimate is free and the written proposal breaks out every line so you can see what you are paying for.
Sherwin-Williams, interior and exterior. We will tell you which line and sheen we are recommending and why before the job starts.
Yes. Warranty coverage runs from 1 to 4 years depending on the package you choose. Your proposal states exactly which one you are getting.
Exterior season runs roughly April through October. Through the winter we stay busy on interiors, unfinished garage walls and ceilings, and smoke damage sealing.
Minnesota contractor registration IR799231, general liability, and workers’ compensation. We will send certificates on request.
Nelson Portillo started Smooth Painting in 2022 after 10+ years in the trade, going from helper to crew supervisor to owner. He stays involved from the estimate through the final walkthrough.
Usually, yes, but not with paint alone. The surfaces get cleaned first, then sealed with a shellac-based stain-blocking primer, and sometimes that takes two coats before the finish paint goes on. Water-based odor-blocking paint on its own tends to let the smell back through within a few months. This is one of the services we do most often through the winter.
Yes. Taping, mudding, sanding, priming, and painting walls and ceilings, done by one crew instead of a drywall contractor followed by a painter. It is indoor work, so it is available all winter, which is usually when people want it done.
A few rooms is often one to three days. A full interior runs about a week. A full exterior is usually three to five days depending on the size of the house, the condition of the siding, and the weather. Your written proposal gives a specific window, and the morning text tells you when the crew is arriving each day.
Yes, and it costs nothing. Every client gets a free one-hour consultation with our interior designer. If you already know exactly what you want, skip it. If you have been staring at four samples on the wall for a month, use it.
Pick a time that works, we come out and look at the actual job, and you get a written proposal with clear pricing. Nothing owed either way.
